Interesting - I used to have an Icom R-9000 HF receiver, and that had a very similar look - it had less controls on the left side, but the CRT and the stuff on the right was pretty much identical. I wonder how much of the same platform the units shared.

still have mine, I bought it and a little silver eagle 200 back in the stone age, everything still works like new. would never get rid of this setup, works like a champ.

I remember when this radio came out. Back in the late '80s, when the FCC totally revamped the rules and created the novice voice class that allowed novice operation on a small segment of 10 meters. That's when I got my novice license, but I immediately got my technician license, bypassed 10 meters, and went straight to 2 meters. Radio Shack later came out with a 2 meter handheld, the HTX-202, but never had a 2 meter mobile.

The caveats with this generation of radios, and I own a Yaesu FT-225RD, are these: No built-in CTCSS. If your local repeater is on tone squelch you're not going to be able to talk through it. No memory channels. The radio is controlled by the VFO. No scanning feature. If you want to scan the band prepare to spin the big knob! Low power. Most of these put out only 10 watts, as it was common practice for them to be used with a linear. If you have no technical skills, don't buy one. After 40+ years they will require some attention and the OEMs and radio shops won't touch them due to the age. But if you can live with all that... you can get a very good price on them at hamfests. You can use 151.4 Hz tone, some decoders are wide enough for that to decode the 150Hz tone.

I used the 106 up until 1992, while in the Army 20 years.

I was a radio operator (05b20) instructor in 1967-8 at Ford Huachuca, AZ. We had the GRC-19 on the bench for training until the summer of '68 when we got some mid 20 count GRC-106 sets to start teaching. I helped set up the lab but transferred out of instructor duty before it was complete. I thought his was was much better than the GRC-19 in my experience.

Ah yes, the old 40-channel Hy-Gains. I converted several to 10-meter FM back in the day. Forget the procedure for the band conversion, but I sourced the FM front-end kits from Bob Heil. Didn't know the 2SC2166 prices had risen above a dollar so I just checked eBay - the first 2166 I ran across was listed for $84. Good grief! You performed a good test for confirming authenticity of the replacement transistor, but shouldn't it be possible to compare the replacement using a transistor checker for equivalent values, especially the hfe?

You said in the video that the 12.1 crystal was available on the internet but I've been looking for weeks and have not been able to find one. Can you tell me where I might look for one? Thanks.

Ok I got a problem with my fs-23 it receives but it does not transmit. What tubes should I replace? I do have the right sonar adapter and Mic that's 4 pin feedback would be appreciated 👍

I'm a Amateur radio operator and recently purchased a second hand SEA 235. On power up the screen shows "235 NZ", CT 1.18, RT 1.25. When I push 73,FNC, ENT ."Amateur" does not show on the screen & no Amateur operation is available. Can anyone please help/advise if the SEA 235 NZ is able to work on Amateur Bands?. Is there a firmware I an install to support this?. If I can install a firmware what software do I require etc. Any information would be much appreciated. Google is no help :(

The 800c and 500c are very desirable… I think you’re probably correct @ being the best of Fisher and all others. The Fisher 500c is the Steinway of receivers!

Thanks for the demo. I just got this radio, and also have its competitor a Yaesu 857D. It seems to be very difficult to come across a reasonably priced tcxo and filters for either radio. I'm curious though which antenna port does the AM broadcast use?
