Rockwell Collins MP1 mobile power supply restoration & upgrading for MOSFET use
Переглядів 2097 місяців тому
This video shows the Collins MP1 mobile power supply, and how to restore it. The MP1 was sold by Collins Radio Co. from early 1960s to late 1970s. It allows the user to operate the tube-based Collins KWM2(a) and KWM1 transceivers mobile from a car battery. Most of these MP1s are not usable any more after more than 60 years due to deteriorating electrolytic capacitors which leakage often also co...
2SC1306 vintage RF power transistor for sale (also compatible with 2SC2166)
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
This video shows the vintage NEC RF power transistor type 2SC1306. The 2SC1306 is a vintage transistor in TO220 package that was used widely as the RF power transistor in CB equipment, from the mid- Seventies up to the late Nineties. In CB radios, the transistor produces about 4 watts carrier and 16 watt peak (at maximum AM modulation) as per FCC regulations, but at that particular FCC power le...
Nylon plunger latches, fasteners to fix your vintage Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood radios
Переглядів 955Рік тому
I finally found my nylon latches needed for many vintage ham radios from the seventies and eighties. Problem is that after 40 years, the original nylon latches become brittle and break off. And then you end up with a radio having loose case panels and/or hatches. I found the correct ones from a company called Southco, they still make them. Here you can find their web site: shop.southco.com/en_u...
Demo of SBE Console II, Sidebander II and Sidebander IV, restored radios from my collection

Propagation on the CB band was good today so I decided to make a video of some SBE radios in my CB radio collection. SBE stood for Sideband Engineers, and that brand sold some of the best CB radios of the late Sixties and Seventies. Today they are highly sought after by collectors, and very valuable when in good condition. The Console II is a 23 channel AM/USB/LSB base station from 1972. It is ...
Korean War AN/PRC-6 man-portable transceiver used in the TV series M*A*S*H

This memorable scene is from the MASH TV series, and is remarkable because of the use of an actual AN/PRC-6 man-portable military transceiver that is correct for the era. • @LifeIsTooShortForQRP

That is correct for antennas that are resonant. When an antenna is not resonant (which is almost always the case for this transmitter in an aircraft having a trailing wire antenna), there can be a large component of current that does not take part in delivering actual radiated power ("out of phase" current, also called "bad SWR"). This is the part of the RF current that the built-in antenna tuner needs to cancel out. But the RF ammeter cannot distinguish between such resonant currents and "blind" currents, and will therefore show a large current going into the (non-resonant) antenna depending on the impedance of the antenna (which on it's turn is frequency dependent). Think of it as the power factor that applies to the AC grid. An inductive load (or capacitive load) will show a large current going in that does actually not dissipate any power in the load. That translates to a power factor of 0, and won't make your outside kWh meter move. A purely resistive load (like an incandescent light bulb) will exhibit a current going in that DOES deliver actual dissipated power, and the power company will charge you for that one. That is a power factor of 1. Anything in between (like an AC motor) will be a load that is partially resistive in combination with a partial inductive (or capacitive) load. It is the same for the antenna that forms the load for this transmitter, but then at a much higher frequencies than 60 Hz. But the concept remains the same.

Interesting - I used to have an Icom R-9000 HF receiver, and that had a very similar look - it had less controls on the left side, but the CRT and the stuff on the right was pretty much identical. I wonder how much of the same platform the units shared.

228 / 5,000 Yes, that's right, the manual explains it (you can download the SL20 manual from the web). It is one of those small jumpers encased in plastic, which they often used for computer hardware in the old days. If the jumper is removed, the power supply is "softer". All you have to do then is adjust them all for the exact same voltage (without load), and when putting them in parallel. Use the same DC wire length for all 3 power supplies. then the current will distribute nicely across the SL20 supplies. 73s.

I remember when this radio came out. Back in the late '80s, when the FCC totally revamped the rules and created the novice voice class that allowed novice operation on a small segment of 10 meters. That's when I got my novice license, but I immediately got my technician license, bypassed 10 meters, and went straight to 2 meters. Radio Shack later came out with a 2 meter handheld, the HTX-202, but never had a 2 meter mobile.

@@LifeIsTooShortForQRP I don't remember those. I bought a Kenwood mobile. Cost almost $400. In 1988. Now I have a Yaesu FT2900 in my car, that cost less than $150. But it's too complicated for me. I had to buy a USB cord and the software to even set it up. That Kenwood was so simple. I wish they still made radios like that, just cheaper. A radio should be a radio, not a computer.

The caveats with this generation of radios, and I own a Yaesu FT-225RD, are these: No built-in CTCSS. If your local repeater is on tone squelch you're not going to be able to talk through it. No memory channels. The radio is controlled by the VFO. No scanning feature. If you want to scan the band prepare to spin the big knob! Low power. Most of these put out only 10 watts, as it was common practice for them to be used with a linear. If you have no technical skills, don't buy one. After 40+ years they will require some attention and the OEMs and radio shops won't touch them due to the age. But if you can live with all that... you can get a very good price on them at hamfests. Happy hunting!

It highly depends on condition, serial number and installed options. A nice KWM380 in good cosmetic condition and no corrosion, but without any options and with serial number above 700 can be close to $3000. All options installed and good condition (like a HF-380 version) can go for more than $7000. A raggedy KWM380 with a serial number below 300 is probably more in the $1500 range. Hope this helps.

Communications Power Inc. was a subsidiary of the Gulf and Western Industries conglomerate during the 1960s and 1970s. Gulf and Western Industries, founded by Charles Bluhdorn, was a diversified conglomerate with interests in various industries, including entertainment, manufacturing, and commercial communications. CPI was part of Gulf and Western's portfolio during that period, a commercial grate 11 meter radio with components typically found in the commercial two-way radio world. That’s the reason many of the CPI radios today still perform well, 40+ years after they were made.

Ah yes, the old 40-channel Hy-Gains. I converted several to 10-meter FM back in the day. Forget the procedure for the band conversion, but I sourced the FM front-end kits from Bob Heil. Didn't know the 2SC2166 prices had risen above a dollar so I just checked eBay - the first 2166 I ran across was listed for $84. Good grief! You performed a good test for confirming authenticity of the replacement transistor, but shouldn't it be possible to compare the replacement using a transistor checker for equivalent values, especially the hfe?

I'm a Amateur radio operator and recently purchased a second hand SEA 235. On power up the screen shows "235 NZ", CT 1.18, RT 1.25. When I push 73,FNC, ENT ."Amateur" does not show on the screen & no Amateur operation is available. Can anyone please help/advise if the SEA 235 NZ is able to work on Amateur Bands?. Is there a firmware I an install to support this?. If I can install a firmware what software do I require etc. Any information would be much appreciated. Google is no help :(

    • @LifeIsTooShortForQRP
      @LifeIsTooShortForQRP 4 місяці тому

In my current SEA235, I have firmware version 1.25 for EPROM U26, and firmware version 2.02 for EPROM U12. (one is the DSP firmware, and the other the control firmware, not sure which one is which). Amateur mode works fine in that one. The one in the video has firmware versions 1.17 and 1.25, thus actually slightly older than your radio, and the amateur mode works in that one as well, as you can see in the video. I have had a SEA235 with firmware 1.01 for U12, and that one still had the "amateur" mode. So I doubt firmware has something to do with your problem. But if you want, I can email you the binary data files for the EPROMS, no problem. But you will have to find someone with an EPROM programmer to erase and reprogram your current EPROMS (the SEA235 has no flashable firmware, everything is in EPROMS). I can also send you a PDF with the complete technical manual for this radio, but you should be able to find that on the web as well as I have uploaded it to several manual websites in the past. Hope this helps.
